5 Tips on How to Save Water

Hello Blog Readers,

This is a bit of a different post, but it is covering this blog's topic - saving paper. This post is 5 of my recommended tips for saving paper.

Tip #1 - Use a Tea Towel When Washing Hands

A tea towel is a little towel that is typically used to clean. A tea towel is a great alternative to paper towel because it dries your hands and saves paper at the same time. The only downside to tea towels is that they need to be washed, which uses water but it should not be a huge problem as you can simply throw them in the wash with another load. I believe that in the long run, tea towels are better than paper towel as it is way less wasteful and harmful to the environment.

Tip #2 - Keep Used Paper

Keeping used paper is a very general goal that many people struggle to fulfil. There are two main ways to keep used paper. Firstly, if you use a paper towel to clean up a little water patch and it can still be used again, simply tuck it into the roll as I did in the image below and use it for next time. Also, if you break off two sheets of paper towel and you only use one, instead of throwing out the second, you can tuck it into the roll and use it in the future.

Secondly, if you use half of a piece of paper when doing something, do not throw away the scraps. Even though this is a cliche saying, it is very true. If I am drawing a picture and there is still paper left over, I can simply cut the excess paper and leave it for someone else if they need to write a small letter or something of the sort. The second picture below shows a small piece of paper I found in my house that was a scrap and will be put to use soon.

Tip #3 - Use Online Flashcards

Especially for students, using online flashcards is a great alternative to paper when studying. I know that when I have a big test coming up, I tend to resort to using cue cards and I use about 20 of them per test. Wasting paper in this regard can be stopped using online programs such as Quizlet. Quizlet is one of the most popular studying website, and it is certainly useful and great for the environment as it lets you study online without using paper.

Tip #4 - Type Instead of Write (Even if you are Printing it)

Unless you have the capability to write microscopically, chances are that your writing is bigger than typing with 12 point font on Word. Even if you are eventually going to print it, typing saves more paper than writing for the simple reason that the text is smaller, so it does not take up as much paper. Also, people tend to write double-spaced so that it is neat and organized, but that is not necessary when typing, and even if you do put it on 1.5/2.0 spacing, it ends up being smaller than printed writing and takes up less paper. Below is a comparison of the word "Hello" typed and written and it is safe to say that the typed version is way neater and smaller.

This image shows how much smaller electronic letters are than written letters

Tip #5 - Do not Throw Away Ruined Paper

Many people tend to throw away ruined paper without thinking of the harm that it causes to the environment. One paper is not a big deal, but it ends up building up and causing a great deal of harm to our world. If you make a little mistake, you can simply erase it or use whiteout/liquid paper to get rid of it and reuse the paper. If you ruin paper a lot and this solution cannot help, maybe you can try to make it into an artistic piece or try to find a creative way to conserve this paper. Throwing it away should become your last resort because we need to work together to sustain the world and saving as much paper as possible is a step in the right direction.

I really hope that you have learned a trick or two (or five) from this post and please subscribe and send me a shout if you have any comments or want to contact me. All of the pictures except for the Quizlet one were taken by me and if you wish to use them, you are required to send me a shout and ask me if it is alright.

Thank you so much for reading my post,
